Nine e-learning modules general language-and-culture for (young) adults, aiming at the communicative beginners’ level  A1-A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages:

NL-FR and FR-NL
NL-RO and RO-NL
NL-SK and SK-NL
FR-TR and TR-FR
TR-NL

These e-learning courses are characterized by a multimedia approach, combining text, sound and image, and are polyvalent, i.e. can be used in semi-autonomous settings.

The user builds up his own learning path, choosing either to follow the carefully elaborated didactic progression or to make a selection of learning contents and access the module according to his personal needs. Special attention is given to contrastive errors.

Some of the features of the Lingu@com™ e-courses include:

  • A fresh, modern interface and intuitive multimedia learning environment
  • A wide variety of exercise types, containing lots of audio fragments (pre-recorded speech of native speakers or live-generated synthetic speech), illustrations and pictures, that allow for the training of all language competences
  • A gradual didactic progression, ultimately leading to correct communication in real-life, authentic situations at the A1-A2 level of the CEFRL
  • A large flexibility: the learner determines his own learning path selecting the communicative situations most important to him. He can focus his learning activities on practising or rather on studying the theory, he can listen to any text fragment from the module, etc.
  • A set of practical learning aids, such as error feedback, a didactic electronic dictionary, etc.
  • Aids for learners with reduced sight or reading difficulties such as dyslexia: text-to-speech (generating natural sounding speech from any text) and screen magnification

The final evaluation of the European Commission has assigned a score 9 ("Very good") to the Lingu@com™ modules. Quotation: "The innovative aspects of the modules was a major focus of the project and the 9 interactive modules can be considered an added value in promoting less widely taught European languages. … The modules … use technologies suitable for visually impaired people and people with special reading needs. … The system of internal evaluation … of internal validation and peer assessment of the modules refers to content and technical issues. These activities … have drawn on a very clear vision of the need of new materials for language learning … on the needs of the target groups and specific learning and teaching cultures within the partner countries."

The opinion of Alemngu Nicodemus Ntellah:

“I fell in love with this language module from the first day I was introduced to it, it was so interactive and met beyond my expectations. I studied with it just for a week and ended up with a 73% in a Dutch language exam (both written and oral). What else would I say, order than encourage any one who is ready for a new challenge to give it a try. I appreciate the works of all those who conceived the brilliant idea to introduce this module”.

The Lingu@com learning™ modules were created by a consortium of 8 partners from Belgium , Romania , Slovakia and Turkey , more precisely:

Universiteit Hasselt – Centrum Toegepaste Linguïstiek, Diepenbeek (contractor and co-ordinator)
