Research into language use in companies situated in Liège

In June 2015 Carole Timmermans, a second-year master student of multilingual communication at the university of Liège (ULg), published her master’s thesis. Its goal: Evaluating the evolution of foreign language use in companies situated in Liège. For this purpose, she conducted an online survey.

The major current trends are confirmed

The results confirm a trend often put forward by the economic world, namely the increasing use of English in companies’ external communication, followed by Dutch.

The majority of the inquired companies clearly indicates the importance given to the development of their staff’s linguistic competences and consequently to language trainings. That is why many companies wish to stimulate the use and development of these competences through activities that focus on foreign language communication and that are organised in the company itself.
